Fifteen days. A continent away. A world of possibilities unlocked. Recently, Vasal Education students embarked on an extraordinary journey to the United States under the AccessUSA Summer School Residential Mobility Program. What began as a trip soon became a transformative experience, igniting a passion for exploration and knowledge among young minds.
As part of this enriching program, 19 students from our K-12 schools immersed themselves in the vibrant academic atmosphere of the University of Detroit Mercy, where they joined a cohort of young minds from countries like the USA, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Chile and Dubai. This multicultural setting provided a fertile ground for learning beyond textbooks.
On campus, they successfully earned 3 credits in courses such as Business and Innovation, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Transportation and Design. They collaborated with professors to understand the intricacies of editing programs, robotics, electronics and business management. These interactions not only broadened their academic horizons but also gave them insights into the rigorous learning methodologies of American universities.
The practical application of these theoretical concepts was emphasised during workshops and hands-on projects. For instance, students engaged in designing and programming robots, developing business plans and exploring innovations in various industries. These experiences not only enhanced their technical skills but also nurtured their creativity and critical thinking abilities.
Beyond the confines of Detroit Mercy, our students ventured to renowned institutions like the College of Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit and Alma College in Alma City, Michigan. At CCS, renowned for its focus on transportation design, they immersed themselves in the world of automotive aesthetics and functionality. They gained insights into the design process, from conceptualisation to prototype development, under the guidance of industry experts and professors who shared their real-world experiences.
Alma College, known for its intimate campus community and strong academic traditions, provided our students with a comprehensive orientation. They learned about college admissions processes, financial aid options and campus life. Interactive sessions with current students and faculty members offered invaluable perspectives on academic expectations and extracurricular opportunities.
However, their journey wasn’t limited to academic pursuits. The United States beckoned with a rich tapestry of culture and heritage. From the historic charm of Detroit to the academic allure of Alma College, our students soaked in the American spirit. They engaged with industry leaders, explored iconic landmarks and forged friendships that transcended borders.
A highlight of their cultural exploration was a visit to Henry Ford’s Automotive Hall of Fame, where they marvelled at antique car displays and participated in insightful discussions with industry experts. The experience broadened their understanding of automotive history and innovation, fostering a deeper appreciation for American ingenuity.
In addition to academic and cultural experiences, our students actively participated in community service initiatives. They volunteered at local shelters, participated in environmental conservation projects and engaged with community leaders to understand the social challenges facing American communities. These experiences instilled a sense of social responsibility and empathy, reinforcing Vasal Education’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded global citizens.
Amidst lectures and cultural excursions, evenings were dedicated to homework sessions and participation in local events. Meetings with professionals from AutoZone offered invaluable insights into American work culture, preparing our students for future academic and professional endeavours abroad.
A memorable conclusion to their journey was a scenic boat cruise along the Detroit River, providing a panoramic view of both the USA and Canada. As they reflected on their adventure-filled days, our students returned home with renewed vigour and a profound sense of purpose for their academic futures.
